The year was 1949. India was 2 years-old and Hiralal Dayalal Shah was a curious 16 year-old. In retrospect, it was almost as if the country and Hirabhai’s journey were running parallel to each other. Hirabhai, like the country back in 1949, was young, energetic and motivated. At that age, he decided to start working with his uncle, who ran a modest grocery store in Pune. He learned the ropes of the business as quickly as free India began to set her roots in commerce and policy. Both would go on to carve their name in history, in their own modest ways. For a young Hirabhai and a young India, every opportunity was a chance to learn, grow, understand trade and achieve excellence. Brimming with curiosity and a hunger to succeed, Hirabhai travelled across rural Maharashtra following the journey of the rice grain from field to the homes of consumers, even if it meant working 18-hour shifts. Little did he know that his hard work would be the foundation of a business that would thrive and sustain itself for generations to come. After learning the trade, understanding the nuances of the market and gaining immense knowledge from his on ground research, Hirabhai realised that it was time to leave the nest and branch out to newer markets. Through his hard work, he had built a solid foundation for his career. However, flying solo was never going to be easy and every problem that he encountered only strengthened his resolve. Back in the days, when venture capitalists weren’t in vogue, Hirabhai raised money to start his business the old school way. He turned to family, well-wishing friends and acquaintances and with generous contributions registered a partnership firm Shah Popatlal Hiralal and bought an office space in Shukrawar Peth in Pune.
